The amount of deaths caused by the tsunami was very large. There were 20 319 deaths and 405 719 people were affected (in general). Outside of Japan, 1 person died in Papva, Indonesia because of the tsunami. Causes of the deaths included collapsing, electrocution, gas explosions, damaged tanks, floating debris, but the most common cause was drowning in the flooded areas of the town.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
There were 123 countries and 33 international organizations that had offered to help Japan. Multiple religious groups donated funds, equipment, supplies and volunteer time. The Japanese Red Cross also received $1 billion in donations and dispatched more than 200 emergency relief teams to the disaster zone. The Singapore Red Cross and Japan Association said as of March 31st, 2011, residents of Singapore had donated $3.15 million for disaster relief. Contributors in South Korea had donated $50 million to various organizations and by May 2011, the people of Taiwan had donated/pledged $216 million.

OPERATION TOMODACHI
'Operation Tomodachi' was the United States' military operation to provide assistance and humanitarian aid to Japan. 20 000 US military personnel, including 19 navel vessels and 120 aircrafts, provided assistance and moved supplies to the disaster area. This costed $90 million.
